Machame Route

The Machame route is also known as the Whiskey route, given its reputation for being a tough climb, in contrast to the easier Marangu route, which is known as the Coca Cola route. Unlike the gradual incline and hut accommodations found on the Marangu Route, the climbers on Machame hike steeper trails, for longer distances, while sleeping in tents.

Meet and great on arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport and drive to Arusha for overnight.

Leave Arusha for Machame Gate, where you will meet our porters, guides and cooks that will that will
spend the next 6 days trekking with you to Uhuru Peak “The roof of Africa”. After arriving, wait at the
gate while register your climb, porters and guides make final preparations. Hike to Machame Camp, our
porters and cooks will go ahead and prepare the camp site before you arrive. 5 hours
Overnight: Machame Hut

Ascend through glades of the rain forest and continue to rocky ridge until the spur opens out and the
route turns west into a river gorge at 3,658m (12,598ft). Overnight at the Shira Hut Camp. 4 hours.


From Shira Plateau you continue to peak of Kibo. Ascend to Lava Tower, called the”Shark’s Tooth” and
on the Arrow Glacier at an altitude of 4,876m. Continue on the Barranco Hut at 3,860m (12,795ft), 6
hours.


Leave the Barranco Hut to ascend through the Barranco Wall in the Karanga Valley. Continue up to the
Barafu Hut at 4,600m (15,500ft), 8 hours. The peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo can be seen.


SUMMIT DAY: Very early in the morning you make your way to Stella Point at 5,745m before making the
final traverse to the Uhuru Peak, highest point in the continent of Africa, at 5,985m (19,340ft),
approximately 6hrs. Descend to the Mweka or Rau Hut Camp at 3,100m, approximately 6hours.

Descend down through the rain forest to the Mweka Park Gate, 4 hrs. At the Park Gate you will be met
by the driver guide drive back to Arusha.

Today you will leave the hotel for The Kilimanjaro International Airport for departure flying back home
or continue for safari with us.
