Day 1
Met on arrival at Kilimanjaro airport and brought to Impala Hotel for
overnight
Day 2
After registration formalities at Marangu National Park Gate transfer
to Rongai. Walk through attractive forest that shelter variety of wildlife,
including the beautiful Kilimanjaro Colobus monkey to the first camp
at the edge of the moorland zone (2,600m.) with extensive views over
the Kenyan plains. [3-4 hours walking].
Day 3
Ascend steadily up to the 'Second Cave' (3,450m.) with views of Kibo
and the Eastern ice fields on the crater rim to the peaks of Mawenzi.
The campsite is in a sheltered valley near Kikelelwa Cave (3,600m.)
[6-7 hours walking].
Day 4
A short, steep climb up grass slopes with all round views and
a tangible sense of wilderness. Leave for the next camp at Mawenzi Tarn
(4,330m.) [3-4 hours walking].
Day 5
Cross the lunar desert of the 'Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach
Kibo Hut (4,750m.) at the bottom of the Kibo crater wall. [4-5 hours
walking].
Day 6
Start the final, the steepest and most demanding, part of the climb
by torchlight around 12.a.m crossing through loose volcanic scree to
reach the crater rim at Gillman's Point (5,685m.) Those still feeling
strong can make the three hour round trip to Uhuru Peak (5,895m.); passing
close to the spectacular glaciers and ice cliffs that still occupy most
of the summit area. The descent to our final campsite at Horombo (3,720m.)
[11-15 hours walking].
Day 7
A steady descent down through moorland to Mandara Hut (2,700m.), We
then continue descending through lovely lush forest to the National
Park gate at Marangu (1,850m.) [5-6 hours walking]. Drive back to Impala
hotel.
Day 8
Transfer to Kilimanjaro airport for departure flight or continue for
safari with us.
